Professors Steve Nutt (Materials Science) and Travis Williams (Chemistry) will undertake a collaborative project to develop a recycling solution for composites in wind blades. The PI’s will develop a chemical solvolysis method to separate fibers and matrix, then return both components to service for multiple life cycles. The project, entitled “Recycling Composites to Sustain Wind Energy,” builds on a multi-year collaboration that crosses disciplinary boundaries (and Watt Way) to leverage the complementary perspectives and expertise of science and engineering. The project is supported by USC’s Office of Research and Innovation President’s Sustainability Initiative Large Program Award and kicks off July 1, 2024.
