Polymer Film Dewetting for High Through-Thickness Permeability Prepregs

Researcher – Sarah (Katz) Schechter

Previous studies have shown that increasing air evacuation in the z– (or transverse) direction could virtually eliminate porosity caused by entrapped air or moisture in OoA/VBO manufacturing. Polymer film dewetting has been investigated to produce unidirectional (UD) prepreg with high through-thickness permeability (UdSCpreg). The resin film dewetting technique substantially increases the room-temperature permeability of laminate configurations. This work introduces a potentially scalable technique for producing OoA prepregs with discontinuous resin distributions from any fiber bed.
